Jesse was born in 1966 and started carving at the age of 12 when his older brother Nathan Baker put a carving knife in his hand. He does house construction now for the Capilano reserve in North Vancouver but carves when he finds the time as it is a passion of his. He grew up on the Capilano reserve, part of the Squamish Nation. His grandfather is Chief Simon Baker (Khot-La-Cha) and his father is Chief Ronald Baker. His biggest influence when carving was from Master Carver Beau Dick, who he helped on a totem pole in Stanley Park. Other artists that had an influence on him growing up were William Watts and Marvin Baker.
