Van Joseph is a member of the Squamish Nation. He was born in 1964 in New Westminster and grew up in Surrey and North Vancouver, British Columbia.
When Van moved to North Vancouver at the age of 15 he was inspired by Squamish Nation Artists and began to carve under Marvin Baker, later being taught by Floyd Joseph and Paul Joseph. He mainly concentrates on his wood carvings but has also done paintings and carvings in argillite. His works include masks, totem poles, bowls and plaques.
