Ruth Joseph Baker was born in Vancouver, BC, in 1966. Ruth was born into the Squamish Nation and is of Coast Salish descent. Ruth is the youngest of ten children and started carving at the age of 11. Her main influence and informal training came from her five brothers and her father the late Chief Larry Joseph., who passed is own legacy as a carver to his daughter. Ruth is proud of her heritage and displays this pride in her own skillful and unique style.

Ruth’s art is sought after by many collectors. The fine definition in her form lines and cuts makes her carvings very desirable. Ruth is keeping the Skomish peoples’ culture alive in her art and by teaching carving classes to the youth of the Squamish Nation.
