Kolten was raised in the village of Xwemelch’stn (Capilano reserve) part of the Squamish Nation. He was born in 1992 and has been an artist his entire life.
His family is the Baker family, and they are the House Of Liluwagila from the Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw.
His mentor in carving has been his uncle Klatle Bhi. He has also learned a great deal from all his family that are artists.
He does a lot of drawing and painting, so when he picked up a knife it was all familiar to him. He was raised in a family strongly rooted in the Potlach traditions, which has been a large part of him and his art.
The piece of work Kolten is most proud of is usually the most recent one he is working on. But if he were to think back, he would choose his first mask because of how much of a learning curve it was at first.
Kolten’s style of art comes from his Kwakiutl, Squamish, Tlingit background, as well as improvising.
