Koda Spence is a Squamish and Haida carver by trade. At a very young age, Koda began to assist his father, master-carver John Spence, with the painting portion of his work. At 19, Koda began to develop his own practice under his father’s apprenticeship. While is unique style takes shape, Koda says his father is a great inspiration to him, and pushes him to explore new designs and techniques. He finds his passion for carving helps to teach him the art of patience and commitment, and notes the process as extraordinarily satisfying and rewarding.
In the future, Koda intends to carve more works featuring animals such as whales and frogs, and hopes to create more complete collections of carvings as his own distinct style evolves.
