Gary was born in December 1963 in North Vancouver, BC. He is a representative of the Squamish Nation of the Coast Salish People. His family crests are the Thunderbird and the Killer Whale.
He started carving at the age of 14, learning skills from his cousin, Cody Mathias. He also cited Richard Baker and Warren Joseph his teachers. Gary’s works has a distinction on theme, whether an Eagle or a Killer Whale. But one of his favourite figures to carve is salmon which he can carve even without looking at the figure itself. One reason his favourite to carve is salmon is because he has worked in the Capilano Salmon Hatchery for years. His artworks are in many collections in North America and worldwide.
His advice to young people beginning to carve is to take time and have more practice especially in drawing first and foremost.
