Elaine Joseph was born in North Vancouver, British Columbia. She grew up on the Mission and Capilano Reserve area of the Squamish Nation. Being the only child of Susan and John August, and having her mother being a descendant of a hereditary chief ( Tyee Joseph), she desires to envelop her indigenous skills in many art forms.
Elaine found her passion for art expression from growing up among many artists in her family. Her family has experience in: carving, beading, knitting. weaving. and print design.
From these arts, Elaine chose to start out with wood-carving at the age of twelve. Her first carving was a salmon plaque. Later she took an interest in masks in which one of them she specialized in carving> Wild- Woman. She has made three of these favorite masks as of today. Also Raven, Eagle, Wolf, and Bear were some of the masks and plaques she has done.
Her mentors who had great impact in giving her the knowledge and creative wisdom are her Father John August and the late Anthony Christopher Paull
Present day influencers are Frederick Baker and Patrick Charlie.
Elaine’s goal is to master her artistic interests into a career. She also wants to continue nourishing her soul with her love for indigenous art.
