Brad Joseph

I am from Squamish Nation. Born Sept 3/1959. I started by learning to draw at the age of 9 years old, then picked up my first piece of wood at the age of 12 years old.

I’ve been carving for a little over 50 years. My mentors have been my late father Stanley Joseph Sr. and my older brothers. I have 7 brothers, all of us are artists,  6 of us carvers and 1 painter. I carve yellow and red cedar.

There are so many carvings I have done over the years and I would say I’m proud of every one. I do remember being particularly proud of helping my older brother Stanley Joseph Jr carve his totem poles. I was inspired by watching my father and brothers.

I’m proud to be a Squamish Nation member, I am proud to have been taught to work with wood and to pass on my teachings to other young people over the years. I have 2 boys who I have also taught, in the same way I was to carry on the same traditions.
